There is a family of chemicals in the body called Prostaglandins. These chemicals cause fever, pain and inflammation. They also help blood to clot and work to protect the stomach lining from harmful acid effects.

When should NSAIDs be used?

NSAIDs are most often used for the treatment of mild or moderate pain, fever and inflammation. More specifically, they are used to treat sports injuries, menstrual cramps, arthritis and headaches. Toradol, or Ketorolac is to be used only to treat short term, moderately severe pain that is acute and would be treated with opioids otherwise. Aspirin is also an NSAID and is commonly used to stop blot clotting and to help prevent heart attacks and strokes in those who are at a higher risk.

NSAID side effects

NSAIDs are known to have many side effects. The type of NSAID will determine how frequent the side effects are. Most common include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, a decrease in appetite, constipation, headache, drowsiness, dizziness and a rash. NSAIDs may cause you to retain fluids and cause edema. The worst side effects include liver or kidney failure, bleeding for too long after surgery or injury and ulcers.

Some of those who have an allergy to NSAIDs might be short of breath when they take it. Thos who have asthma have a higher risk of allergic reactions that are serious and those who have an allergic reaction to one type of NSAID will likely have similar reactions to different NSAIDs.

NSAIDs and other drugs - interaction

NSAIDs work to reduce the flow of blood to the kidneys and can cause diuretics to become less effective, with reduce how much lithium or Eskalith or methotrexate or Rheumatrex.

NSAIDs have also been found to decrease the body's ability to cause blood clotting and can increase the chances for bleeding. When taken in conjunction with other medications that can increase the risk of bleeding, such as warfarin or Coumadin, the likelihood for serious bleeding problems increases.
