List of High Blood Pressure Medications

Many people consider high blood pressure to be the "silent killer" because there are so many people that have it and are unaware of it. Some people don't notice any symptoms for quite some time. With time, however, those who don't get their high blood pressure treated can wind up very ill and can even die.

There are medications that can actually save lives when taken daily to control their blood pressure. Those who eat healthy meals, take their medications and exercise can get their blood pressure under control fairly easily.

Most of the individuals that take medications for high blood pressure do not notice side effects. As with all medications, however, medications to treat high blood pressure do have the potential for side effects. Some have issues such as dizziness, upset stomach or headaches. These issues are considered small when compared to what might happen if medicine is not taken.

Types of Medications for High Blood Pressure

Diuretics: This type of medication is sometimes referred to as "water pills" because of the way they flush the extra sodium and water out of the body.

Beta-blockers: These medications help to reduce the impulses from nerves to the blood vessels and the heart. The reduced impulses help to slow the heart beat and make it beat less forcefully. This allows the blood pressure to drop because the heart is not working as hard.

Angiotensin: These are called ACE inhibitors. They work by preventing the hormone known as angiotesin II from forming. This hormone usually causes the blood vessels to contract. ACE inhibitors allow relaxation for the blood vessels so the blood pressure can drop.

Angiotensin antagonists: These medications help to protect the blood vessels from the hormone angiotensin II. This allows the blood vessels to widen and the blood pressure can drop.

Calcium channel blockers: Also called CCBs, they prevent calcium from getting into the blood vessels and the heart muscle. This also allows blood vessels to become relaxed so the blood pressure can drop.

Alpha-blockers: These medicines work to reduce the number of nerve impulses that reach the blood vessels. This allows the blood to flow more smoothly, which allows the blood pressure to drop.

Alpha-beta-blockers: This medicine works much like alpha blockers, but they also work to slow the heart, much like beta blockers. Because of these effects, less blood has to pass through the blood vessels and blood pressure can drop.

Nervous system inhibitors: These types of medications work to allow the blood vessels to relax by controlling the impulses of the nerves to the vessels. The relaxation causes the vessels to widen and allows blood pressure to drop.

Vasodilators: This type of medication opens the blood vessels by causing the muscle in the walls of the blood vessels to relax. This allows blood pressure to drop.
