What is it?
Amaryl, generic name glimepiride, is a medication that your doctor will prescribe to help treat your type two diabetes, which is also known as adult onset or non insulin dependent diabetes.
Who is the maker?
Sanofi-Aventis is the maker of the brand name Amaryl and generic forms of this medication are produced by many different companies.
How it works
Amaryl belongs to the family of diabetes medicines called sulfonylureas. These medications help to encourage insulin production in the pancreas. In addition, it works to allow a better response to insulin within the cells of the body. The result is that the levels of the blood sugar go down.
Benefits
In studies with Amaryl, those who took this medication were able to decrease the levels of hemoglobin A1c by an average of two percent when compared to those who did not take it.
HbA1c is the test that is used for the measurement of the control of long term sugar levels in those that have diabetes. Normal test levels are often lower than 6% in those who do not have diabetes, and those with diabetes often have higher test results.
Studies have found that the higher these test results, the higher the chances for longer term issues as a result from diabetes. These issues might include:
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Heart disease
- Diabetic nephropathy
By using Amaryl to control levels of the blood sugar, you may lower your chances of developing any of these associated issues.
Possible side effects
All prescription medications have the chances of causing side effects. There is the chance for side effects while being treated with Amaryl. Not all people who are prescribed this medication will notice side effects because it is generally tolerated well. If you do have side effects, you should know that they are usually mild and don't need to be treated. Side effects that are more serious are not reported often.
Frequently reported side effects can include:
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Low blood sugar
- Nausea
- Headache
