Amoxil, active ingredient amoxicillin, is an antibiotic that is only available by prescription. It is used for the treatment of many different infections. While it is most often taken alone, it can be taken in conjunction with other kinds of antibiotics to better treat some types of infections.

How it works
Amoxil is part of the class of medications called aminopenicillins. These are part of the bigger class of medications called beta-lactam antibiotics. These are named after the structure of the antibiotics, which is much like a ring. This type of medication works to stop bacteria from forming walls to their cells, and eventually kills them.
Possible Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the potential for side effects while taking Amoxil. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects, as it is generally well tolerated. Less commonly reported are side effects that are serious.
Potential side effects might include: rashes, diarrhea, thrush, vomiting and nausea.
