How it Works
Arava is part of the class of medications known as "disease modifying antirheumatic drugs," or DMARDs. The medications in this class work in many ways to help slow the progress of rheumatoid arthritis.
Arava works to block the body from making pyrimidines. The body makes T cells as part of the immune system. In those that have rheumatoid arthritis, these cells are overactive and make chemicals that damage and inflame the joints. In order to divide, the T cells need pyrimidines. So, when this medication blocks the body's ability to make them, it reduces the joint damage and inflammation.
