Atacand, active ingredient candesartan cilexetil, is a medication that is available by prescription only. It has been approved for the treatment of many conditions involving the blood vessels and heart. It belongs to the class of medications known as ARBs, or "angiotensin II receptor blockers."

How it Works
Atacand belongs to the class of medications called ARBs. These medications work to block the receptors for angiotensin II. This will help you to decrease how effective angiotensin II is in the body. This chemical causes the blood vessels to constrict. When the angiotensin II is blocked, the blood vessels can stay open and help the blood pressure to go down.
Atacand Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the possibility for side effects while taking Atacand. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. When you do notice side effects, they are usually minor and will require little or no treatment. Other side effects that are more serious are less commonly reported.
Most of the commonly reported side effects include: dizziness, cold or flu, pain in the back, high blood levels of potassium and low blood pressure.
