Ativan - What is it?
Ativan, active ingredient lorazepam, is a medication that is available by prescription only. It is used for the treatment of anxiety. There is an injectable form of this medication available, which is used to ease anxiety and nervous tension, but also treats seizures that are severe. Ativan belongs to the class of drugs called benzodiazepines.

How It Works
Ativan belongs to the class of medications known as benzodiazepines. These medicines have many effects on a body that include: causing sleepiness, stopping seizures, causing short term memory issues, relaxing the muscles and reducing anxiety.
All of the medications in this class are known to have the same effects on some level, but it depends of which particular medication you are taking.
Possible Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the potential for side effects. Not everyone that takes this medicine will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are most often minor and require little or no treatment. Less commonly reported are side effects that are more serious.
Commonly reported side effects might include: feeling of calm and sleepiness, weakness, unsteadiness and dizziness.
