Essential Information
You should not take this medication if you're pregnant as it could harm your baby. Some people who take azathioprine have noticed a fast growing and rare type of cancer. This is a condition that attacks the bone marrow, spleen or liver and it has the potential to be life threatening. This has mainly happened to young adults and teens that take this or similar medications for the treatment of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.
Call your health care provider immediately if you notice any of the following side effects: loss of appetite, fever, itching, night sweats, tiredness, weight loss, pain in the upper stomach that might spread up to the shoulder, becoming full after you've only eaten a small amount, easy bruising or bleeding, nausea, unusually pale skin, feeling short of breath or light headed, a rapid heart rate, clay colored stools, dark urine or jaundice. Azathioprine works to reduce the blood cells that help the body to fight off infections. You should avoid any activity that will increase the risk of injuries that cause bleeding. Talk to your doctor if you notice signs of an infection.
