Calan - what is it?
Calan, active ingredient verapamil hydrochloride, is a medication that is available by prescription only. It is used for the treatment of many different blood vessel and heart conditions.
Who is the maker of it?
Pfizer, Inc. is the maker of Calan. Various companies make the generic form of this medication.
Uses
Calan has been approved for many different uses that include treatment of: hypertension, angina (chest pain that includes unstable angina, vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina).
How it Works
Calan works to block the calcium channels. It works to slow the rate that calcium enters the heart and blood vessels. This effect relaxes the blood vessels and allows for improved flow of blood and makes the heart have an easier job of pumping blood.
Potential Side Effects
As with all medications, there is the potential for side effects while taking Calan. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects, as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are most often mild and require little to no treatment. Other side effects that are more serious are less commonly reported.
Commonly reported side effects include: dizziness, low blood pressure, headaches, nausea and constipation.
Generic forms of Calan
At this time, there are three strengths of generic Calan: 40mg, 80mg and 120mg. All of these medications come in tablet form.
