Desyrel - What is It?
Desyrel, active ingredient trazodone hydrochloride, is a medication that is prescribed to treat clinical or major depression, also called depression.
Potential Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the potential for side effects while taking Desyrel. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are usually minor and require little or no treatment. Less commonly reported serious side effects are possible.
How It Works?
There are no other medications that work exactly like Desyrel, and it hasn't been established exactly how this medication works. It has been established that Desyrel has an effect on the serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is one of many chemicals that the brain uses to transmit messages from nerve to nerve. When the levels of serotonin lose balance, however, it has been shown to be the cause of many conditions that include depression. Desyrel blocks the receptors from reabsorbing serotonin so there is more available for the nerves in the brain, and that the levels become balanced again. Unlike SSRIs, it is thought that Desyrel also blocks some of the serotonin receptors in the brain.
What If I Forget a Dose?
If you miss a scheduled dose of Desyrel, you should take the dose you missed when you remember. If it's almost time for you to take your next dosage, you should skip the one you missed and return to your normal schedule. You should never double your dosage.
