Dilantin - an overview
Dilantin, active ingredient phenytoin, is a medication that is prescribed for the treatment of specific kinds of seizures in those that have epilepsy. There are many different forms of Dilantin that include: Dilantin Infatabs, Dilantin Kapseals and Dilantin - 125. Dilantin is specifically approved for the control of the following seizures:
- Complex partial seizures - This type of seizure involves a decrease in consciousness (which allows for complex) and occur in one part of your brain (which allows for partial)
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures - This type of seizure is also called a grand mal seizure. They affect the entire brain (which allows for generalized) and include muscle contractions and rigidity.
- Seizures that occur during surgery on the brain

How it works
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that happens when brief recurring changes in the way that the electrical system of the brain works.
Changes such as these can cause a seizure.
Dilantin can help because it works with the sodium channels found in the brain. While it doesn't stop the abnormal activity from happening, it prevents this activity from getting to other brain parts. This is what helps to control seizures.
Secondary Effects
As can happen with any medications, there is the potential for secondary effects. Not all people that take this medication will have secondary effects. Generally, it is well tolerated and if you do notice secondary effects they are most often mild and will likely not need to be treated. Other, more serious secondary effects are not as common.
Commonly reported secondary effects might include:
- Unusual movements of the eye
- Coordination problems in the muscles
- Confusion
- Slurring of the speech
