Edex - an overview
Edex contains the active ingredient called Alprostadil. It is a kind of medication that causes the expansion of blood vessels so that the blood flow through the whole body is increased. The penis experiences more blood flow as well, which helps to cause an erection.
Edex is administered by suppository or injection. When it's administered as a suppository, the medication is put into the opening at the penis tip. When an injection is administered, needle and syringe are used and the injection is administered into the penis directly.
If you have the medication administered via injection, you will find that you will be given medications called Edex, Prostin VR and Caverject that all contain alprostadil. Alprostadil in suppository form can be found under the name of MUSE.
Edex, generic name Alprostadil, should only be taken by men that have ED. If not taken correctly, it is possible to experience permanent damage to the penis.
Is injection effective?
Studies have found that Edex administered via injection can cause erections that are hard enough to have sexual intercourse in more than 80% of men that have ED, no matter what the cause of the problem or age of the patient. This medication delivered in a suppository form has shown to not be as effective as injection form and can provide solid erections in about 30 to 40% of men that have ED.
When will it work?
In most cases, Edex will start to be effective in as little as five minutes, but can take as long as 20 minutes to be effective. Ideally, intercourse will be attempted in about 10 - 20 minutes after the medication is used. The erection should last for about an hour and may last after the patient has ejaculated. This medication should be used no more often than three times weekly and should be spaced at least 24 hours apart.
