Fosamax - what is it?
Fosamax, active ingredient alendronate sodium, is a medication that is available by prescription only. It has been approved for uses that include: the treatment of osteoporosis that occurs in men and women from steroid medications like prednisone, the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in women that are post menopausal, the treatment of osteoporosis in men and the treatment of Paget's disease in both men and women.

How It Works
Fosamax is part of the class of medications called biphosphonates. This medication binds to cells found in the bones and slows the breakdown rate.
Potential Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the potential for side effects while taking Fosamax. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are most often mild and require little or no treatment. Other side effects that are more serious are less commonly reported.
Commonly reported side effects include: bone, joint or muscle pain, heartburn or indigestion, and abdominal pain.
Generic Forms of Fosamax
At this time, generic forms of Fosamax are made by many companies that include Teva Pharmaceuticals and Barr Pharmaceuticals. This medication can be found in tablet form and comes in five different strengths. Currently, the liquid form of generic Fosamax is not available.
