Atarax - what is it?
Atarax, active ingredient hydroxyzine hydrochloride, is a medication that has been approved to treat many different issues. It is available only by prescription and is often used for the treatment of itching and to increase how effective certain opioid pain medications are.
Who is the maker of Atarax?
Pfizer, Inc. used to make the brand name Atarax, but it is no longer on the market. The generic forms of this medication are still for sale and several companies make them.
How It Works
Atarax is part of the group of medications called sedating antihistamines. It stops itching by blocking the receptors for histamines. The anti anxiety aspect is thought to be due to the way it affects parts of the brain. Atarax is also effective at helping to relax skeletal muscles.
Potential Side Effects
As with all medications, there is a chance for side effects while taking Atarax. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are most often mild and require little or no treatment. Other less commonly side effects that are serious may occur.
Potential side effects may include: drowsiness, headaches and dry mouth.
