Intuniv - what is it?
Intuniv, active ingredient guanfacine ER is a medication that has been approved to treat ADHD in teens and children. This medication may be used alone or in conjunction with other long acting stimulant medicines for the treatment of ADHD. Intuniv is unlike other treatments for ADHD as it is a non stimulant and isn't considered to be a controlled substance.

How Does It Work?
Intuniv, a type of guanfacine, has been administered for many years as a treatment of blood pressure that is too high. It is a long acting form, so it needs to be taken only one time a day. Intunive is in the class of medications called "alpha-2a adrenergic receptor agonists." Currently, it isn't clear how Intuniv effectively treats ADHD.
Potential Side Effects
As with all medications, there is a risk for side effects while taking Intuniv. Not all who take this medication will have side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects they are often minor and require little or no treatment. Less commonly reported serious side effects are possible.
Some of the more commonly reported side effects with Intuniv include: Headache, Drowsiness, Abdominal Pain, Fatigue
Potential Interactions
Intuniv does have the potential to interact with many other types of medication.
What to do if you miss a dose?
If you notice that your child has missed two or more doses of this medication in a row, you should talk to your doctor before you give another dose. It is possible that your child will have to begin taking the medication at a lower dosage and slowly work up to the usual dose, as was done when your child first started this treatment.
