Methylin - What is it?
Methylin, active ingredient methylphenidate hydrochloride, is a medication that is prescribed for the treatment of ADHD. It can also be prescribed for the treatment of narcolepsy. There are four types that are available at this time. They include chewable tablets, tablets, oral solution and ER tablets. Since this medication has stimulating properties, there are laws around the way it is prescribed and dispensed.
Who Manufactures It?
Mallinckrodt, Inc. is the maker of Methylin medication.
Uses
As earlier mentioned, Methylin has been licensed for the treatment of ADHD. ADHD not only causes trouble staying still, but it also causes issues focusing, controlling behavior and paying attention. Most people think that ADHD is only found in children, but it can often be found in adults as well (visit ADHD in Adults). Methylin has not been approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults.
This medication has also been approved to treat narcolepsy. This is an illness that causes patients to fall asleep at odd times and uncontrollably. Those with this condition will sometimes look like they are paralyzed as they fall asleep and will suffer from hallucinations at the time of falling asleep. It is also common for those with narcolepsy to fall asleep many times throughout the day.
How It Works
Even though Methylin has stimulant properties, it has been shown to have the opposite effects when used to treat ADHD. Stimulants such as caffeine often cause hyperactivity, but Methylin can be calming when used at the proper doses for treating ADHD. It is not exactly clear how this medication is effective, but it is known that it works with certain brain chemicals. When Methylin is used for the treatment of narcolepsy, it serves as a stimulant and can help people to stay awake and alert throughout the day.
Methylin Side Effects
As with all medications, it is possible to experience side effects when taking Methylin. Not everyone that is taking this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If side effects are noticed, they are usually minor and will require little or no treatment. Some more side effects that are more serious are rarely reported.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of your Methylin, you should take the dose you missed immediately when you remember it. If it's nearly time to take your next dosage, you should skip your missed dose and get back on the normal schedule. If you take a dose after the morning, you might notice that you have problems sleeping and you should never double up a dose.
