Remeron, active ingredient mirtazapine, is a medication that is only available with a prescription. It is used to treat depression, which is also known as clinical or major depression.

Remeron is made by a company called Organon USA. The generic forms of this drug are made by many companies.
How it works
While it isn't exactly clear how this medication works, it is known that there are no other medicines that work like it. Remeron works to block many different types of receptors, including those that work with histamine, alpha, norepinephrine, muscarinic and serotonin. It is not entirely clear how it works, since no other medications work exactly like it.
Is it Effective?
Studies show that Remeron is an effective form of depression treatment for adults. Those taking the drug reported significant improvement in their depression symptoms as compared to those with depression that didn't take it. Long term studies have found that those taking this medication are less likely to notice depression returns than those who do not take it.
Potential Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, it is possible to experience side effects while taking this medication. Not everyone that takes Remeron will notice side effects, as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are usually minor and require little or no treatment. Less commonly reported are side effects that are serious.
