The maker
MedPointe Pharmaceuticals is the maker of brand name Soma. Generic forms are made by many companies.
What it does
At this time, it isn't clear how Soma is effective at easing muscle spasms. It is clear that this medication works primarily with the spinal cord and brain stem and doesn't directly work with the muscles.
The liver changes this medication into a substance called meprobamate, which is a barbiturate that has sedative and anti anxiety properties. Many believe that it is the metabolized substance that increases the risk of abuse in this medication. Even though meprobamate is classified as a controlled substance in the US, Soma is not considered to be a controlled substance.
Secondary Soma effects
All medications have the potential to cause side effects and the same is true with Soma. Not all that take this medication will notice secondary effects because most people do well with it. If you do notice secondary effects, they will likely not need to be treated as they are usually mild. Secondary effects that are more serious are not as common.
Some of the secondary effects that are most often reported might include:
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Drowsiness
Generic forms
At this time, there are both generic and brand name forms of Soma available.
What you should know
Soma has the potential to become habit forming and should only be taken by the person who the prescription was meant for. This medicine should never be taken by anyone else, especially those that have a history of drug addiction or abuse. Be sure that soma is stored in a place that is secure so no one can get it. You might notice that you experience symptoms of withdrawal if you quit taking Soma if you've been taking it for a long time. Don't quit taking it suddenly if you have not discussed it with your health care provider. You might need to gradually decrease your dosage if you want to quit taking Soma completely.
