Subutex - an overview
Buprenorphine is sold under the brand name Subutex. It is a long acting opiate that is most often used to treat dependence on narcotics. Subutex most often comes in the form of a dissolving pill. It is placed under the tongue. The main use of this medication is to prevent individuals from suffering withdrawal symptoms because it stimulates the receptors for opiates within the brain. The opiate receptors seem to be more attracted to Subutex than other drugs including methadone and heroin, and can reduce the desire for these drugs.
The maker
Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Is the maker of Subutex.
What it does
Subutex is made of buprenorphine, which is a narcotic opioid medicine. Buprenorphine clings to the opioid receptors, which are known as opioid mu-receptors. These receptors can be found in all areas of the body. The main effects take place within the central nervous system, but it can create effects in any part of the body that has the mu-receptors.
Secondary effects
Subutex, also called buprenorphine, does have the potential to cause a dependence on it. If the user suddenly stops taking subutex it is possible to experience symptoms of withdrawal. In addition, the desire to take the drug of choice can return. In most cases, this medication is given in dose that range from 12 to 16 mg daily.
Subutex should not be taken occasionally. It is meant to be taken continuously to treat addiction and if you stop taking it too quickly, it can be dangerous.
When this medication is mixed with other types of drugs such as alcohol, sleeping medications or antidepressants, it has the potential to enhance the effects and cause potentially serious health risks. Subutex does have the potential to cause death if it is injected along with tranquilizers. You should not take any other kinds of medications that your doctor has not approved if you are taking Subutex.
If you have any of these secondary effects, you should talk to your doctor right away:
- Shallow and/or slow breathing
- Fainting or feelings of light headedness
