Symbyax - What is it?
Symbyax, active ingredient olanzapine and fluoxetine, is a medication that is available by prescription only. It has been approved to treat the following issues:
Depression that is resistant to other types of antidepressants
Depression that stems from bipolar disorder, also known as bipolar depression.
Symbyax is made up of the medications called Zyprexa, or olanzapine; and Prozac, or fluoxetine.

How It works
Symbyax is made up of the medications called fluoxetine and olanzapine. Olanzapine is part of the class of medications called second generation antipsychotic medications. It isn't totally clear how Symbyax works to treat bipolar disorder. It has been found, however that this medication works to lessen or block the effects of many brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine that are often elevated in those that have bipolar disorder, or manic depression.
Symbyax Effects
In clinical studies done of Symbyax used to treat bipolar depression or depression that is resistant to treatment, those who took the medication noticed that their depression symptoms improved as compared to those who didn't take Symbyax or took olanzapine on its own.
Potential Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there are potential side effects while taking Symbyax. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are usually mild and require little or no treatment. Other side effects that are more severe are less commonly reported.
