Vistaril, active ingredient hydroxyzine, is a medication that is available by prescription only. It has been licensed for many different treatments but is most often used to fight allergic reactions and itching caused from opioids and as a medication for nausea. It is also commonly used as a way to increase how effective opioid pain relievers are.

How It Works
Vistaril is part of the class of medications called antihistamines. It works to treat allergic reactions to opioids by blocking the receptors in the body for histamines. It is thought that it is an effective anxiety treatment because it blocks certain receptors in the brain. Vistaril also causes the skeletal muscles to relax.
Potential Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the potential for side effects while taking Vistaril. Not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects as it is generally well tolerated. If you do notice side effects, they are most often mild and will require little or no treatment. Less commonly reported are side effects that are more serious.
Some of the potential side effects might include: dry mouth (visit dry mouth and hydroxyzine), headaches and drowsiness.
