Zanaflex - an overview
Zanaflex, active ingredient tizanidine hydrochloride, is a medicine that is prescribed to treat muscle spasms, tightness and muscle cramping that can be caused from spinal cord diseases, injuries or MS. This is a short acting medication, which means that each dosage will only last a few hours, so you should save taking it for when you really need to ease the spasms and pain in your muscles.
The maker
Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. Is the maker of the brand name form of Zanaflex. Other companies make the generic forms of this medication.
What it does
Zanaflex is part of the family of medicines called Alpha 2 adrenergic agonists. These medications cling to and wake up the alpha 2 receptors in the brain. This action stops motor neurons. This medicine works in the brain or spinal cord, but doesn't directly affect the muscles.
Secondary effects
All medications carry a risk for secondary effects and Zanaflex is no different. Not every person that takes this medication will have issues and many people tolerate it well. If you do notice secondary reactions they usually don't require treatment as they tend to be mild. Secondary effects that are serious are not as common.
The most commonly reported secondary effects with Zanaflex include:
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
- Drowsiness
What you should know
Zanaflex medication is short acting. You should only take it when you have the need to ease spasms in the muscles.
You should not take this medication if you are currently taking Luvox the antidepressant, or Cipro. You should not take Zanaflex when strong muscle tone is needed for balance or movement. Sometimes, this medication can endanger your safety if you need to have solid muscle tone.
