Zithromax - What is it?
Zithromax, active ingredient azithromycin, is an antibiotic that is available only by prescription. It has been licensed for the treatment of many common types of infections. It belongs to a class of medications known as macrolides. Other medications in this class include erythromycin and clarithromycin.

Uses
Zithromax has been licensed for the treatment of many different conditions including the treatment of infections caused from bacteria including:
- Ear infections, also called otitis media
- PID or pelvic inflammatory disease
- Respiratory infections such as bronchitis
- Sinusitis or sinus infections
- Pneumonia
- Infections of the throat such as pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis or cellulitis
How it works
Zithromax belongs to a class of medications known as macrolides. It works to decrease the ability of the bacteria to produce protein and slows the activities of the peptides, which bacteria depends on to live.
Effects
By stopping the bacteria's peptides and proteins work, Zithromax can help to kill bacteria and avoid infection within the body.
Potential Side Effects
As is the case with all medications, there is the potential for side effects while taking Zithromax. But not everyone that takes this medication will notice side effects. It should also be noted that when people do notice side effects they are most often minor and require little or no treatment.
Some of the most common Zithromax side effects might include: Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, and cramping as well as headache.
There are some side effects that are more serious, but are less commonly reported.
