Lortab

Lortab, also known as hydrocodone/APAP, is available by prescription only and it has been approved for treating moderate to severe pain. This drug is a combination medication using two pain relievers: hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen. Because it is a narcotic, it is classified in the controlled substance category, which means special regulations and certain laws apply to it's sale and use.

Generic Name: Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen
Brand Names: Lortab, Anexsia, Lorcet, Norco, Vicodin, Xodol, Zydone

How Lortab Works

Lortab is made up of two different pain drugs: hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen. The hydrocodone is actually a semi-synthetic narcotic that is in the opioid class and acts as a pain reliever. Its effects are similar to codeine. Hydrocodone can be very effective at relieving certain kinds of pain and can be used to reduce coughing. The drug may cause mood changes, feelings of being fuzzy-headed, and drowsiness.

Acetaminophen, which is also known as "APAP", has been around for long time. It can reduce pain and fever, and is often found in non-prescription products like Tylenol. APAP is actually an acronym that stands for the chemical names that make up acetaminophen. By combining hydrocodone along with acetaminophen patients get more relief over their pain.

The acetaminophen part of the drug may cause problems such as bleeding, liver failure, and diarrhea. There are treatments for Lortab overdose and these might include stomach pumping, induced vomiting, oral ingestion of activated charcoal, and other treatments per the doctor's orders.

Lortab Addiction Issues

The signs of a Lortab addiction may be challenging to distinguish from a variety of other problems like inadequate control of pain or even certain types of mental illness. The common signs that accompany addiction may include finishing off a Lortab prescription far too quickly, keeping oneself secluded, doctor shopping for more pills, and lying about the amount of drug being taken. If you believe you are addicted to Lortab, seek help from your doctor immediately. This narcotic drug is often abused.

Generic Lortab Brands

There are many versions of Lortab available in generic form. The generic brands will go by the name hydrocodone/APAP. You can buy them in either elixir or tablet form. Because Lortab itself is expensive, many pharmacies will not have it in stock. Generic Lortab is often very less expensive.
