Generic Oxycodone

Several types of oxycodone products in a generic form are available on the market today. These include medications that are purely made from oxycodone (short acting and long acting products). In addition, there are now oxycodone combination products available in generic varieties which include combinations with ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen.

An Overview of Generic Oxycodone

Oxycodone hydrochloride works as an active ingredient for various forms of prescribed painkillers. It is found in short-acting, long-acting and combination medications, with almost all products available in the generic form.

Availability of Generic Oxycodone

Nearly all oxycodone products (including the short acting and long acting varieties) are now available in a generic variety. This includes combination oxycodone medicines with ibuprofen or aspirin. In addition, oxycodone combination products which use acetaminophen are also made in the generic form.

It can often be difficult to determine the difference between a brand name and generic form of medication, particularly with the combination forms of oxycodone medications. For example, some manufacturers may still label their generic product with the 'brand' name, rather than using a generic name. However, having a brand name label on a generic medication does not change their status - they are still a generic form of the drug.

What is more, oxycodone products which were 'grandfathered,' are not theoretically approved by the FDA. This is because they were manufactured prior to the creation of the current drug legislation. The FDA is responsible for determining which generic medications are equal to the original; therefore, there is no way to determine whether these grandfather products are equivalent to the originals. The types of oxycodone-grandfathered products include oral solution, oral concentrate and capsules.

Forms of Oxycodone Dosage

You can find oxycodone in many forms of medications including immediate (short-acting) release, extended (long-acting) release and combination drugs.

Immediate Release Oxycodone

Immediate release or short-acting oxycodone (also known as, OxyFast, OxyIR, ETH-Oxydose, Roxicodone and generic forms) is provided in these strengths:
  • Oxycodone hydrochloride - 20mg per mL oral concentrate
  • Oxycodone hydrochloride - 15mg tablets
  • Oxycodone hydrochloride - 10mg tablets
  • Oxycodone hydrochloride - 20mg tablets
  • Oxycodone hydrochloride - 5mg per 5mL oral solution
  • Oxycodone hydrochloride - 5 mg tablets

Grandfathered medications which are not theoretically FDA approved include 5 mg capsules, the oral concentrate and the oral solution. This is because they were released prior to the current drug laws and legislation being established.

Extended Release Oxycodone

Long-acting oxycodone, which comes in tablet form (OxyContin), is available as a generic product. However, sourcing OxyContin can be difficult as several generic oxycodone products have now been removed from the market.

Combination Oxycodone Dosages

Oxycodone is also typically combined with drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. The many types of oxycodone and acetaminophen (oxycodone/APAP) drugs available include:

Tablets:
  • Percocet - 2.5/325mg
  • Endocet & Percocet - 7.5/325mg
  • Endocet & Percocet - 7.5/500mg
  • Endocet & Percocet - 10/325mg
  • Endocet & Percocet - 10/650mg
  • Endocet, Percocet & Roxicet - 5/325mg

Caplets: Roxicet 5/500mg
Capsules: Tylox 5/500 mg Oral solution: Roxicet 5/325mg per 5mL (per teaspoon)

Nearly all these medications are now available to the consumer in the generic form.

The brand name medication, which combines oxycodone and ibuprofen is called Combunox. Combunox contains 400mg of ibuprofen and 5mg of the drug oxycodone hydrochloride per tablet. A generic form of Combunox is available.
