Some of the main substances that cause interactions with the Percocet drug are barbiturates, antidepressants and alcohol. If you're taking any additional medications, be sure to consult your medical practitioner to reduce the risk of any interactions with the Percocet drug.

How Percocet Interactions Work

The following outlines drugs that interact negatively with Percocet causing interactions to occur.

Alcohol
Avoid alcohol at all times when using Percocet. The potential for serious side effects are significantly increased when the narcotic ingredient in Percocet interacts with alcohol. Serious side effects from combining Percocet and alcohol include difficulty breathing, memory loss, extreme drowsiness and feeling confused. The acetaminophen component in Percocet also interacts negatively with alcohol causing potential liver damage.

Antidepressant Forms of Medication
Combining Percocet with a form of antidepressants has the potential to increase side effects, including memory loss, difficulty breathing, confusion and drowsiness. There is also the possibility of more serious side effects occurring. If you take antidepressants and are about to start taking Percocet then you should consult your physician. Close monitoring and adjusting your medications may be required.

Antipsychotic Types of Medication
A combination of Percocet and an antipsychotic drug increases the chances of side effects. General symptoms can include confusion, drowsiness, difficulty breathing and memory loss; however, other more serious side effects can also eventuate. Never take a combination of antipsychotic medications and Percocet without prior consultation with your doctor. Additionally, if you take Percocet with certain antipsychotic medications it may significantly low your blood pressure (hypotension).

Barbiturates
Memory loss, difficulty breathing, drowsiness and confusion are all common side effects experienced from taking Percocet in combination with a barbiturate. Always consult your doctor prior to combining these drugs.

Benzodiazepines
You increase the risk of an interaction when combining benzodiazepines and Percocet. Side effects include drowsiness, memory loss, confusion, as well as difficulty breathing. In addition, the risk of severe side effects is very possible. Before combining the drugs always consult your healthcare professional. Opioids and Other Narcotics
Combining opioids or narcotics with Percocet should only be done with extreme caution. Serious side effects are likely to occur so be sure to consult your physician. These combinations should only be taken under strict supervision.

Other Types of Acetaminophen Products
The daily amount of acetaminophen should be restricted to less than 4 grams a day when using Percocet. Exceeding the daily dosage can lead to severe side effects including liver damage or possible death. The various strengths of acetaminophen in Percocet with each tablet are 650 mg, 500 mg and 325 mg.

It is also important that additional sources of acetaminophen be monitored to avoid a negative interaction. Acetaminophen can be present in pain relievers and other over-the-counter drugs including Tylenol. It is best to avoid any products containing acetaminophen altogether whilst using Percocet. You should only consider using other acetaminophen products if under the supervision of your doctor, or if you can restrict your daily dose to less than 4 grams.

Sleep Medications
One of the side effects of Percocet is drowsiness. Therefore, combining Percocet with any sleeping medications can be dangerous. As a rule, do not combine sleep medications with Percocet and always consult with your doctor before combining medications.
